Ferrtility Assessment: Is Sonohsg better than HSG?
Sonohysterography (Sonohsg), also called Saline infusion Sonography or SIS is a creative, non-radiological way of assessing the Uterine cavity and the fallopian tubes with results similar to HSG (Hysterosalpingography)
In Fertility Assessment, sonohsg is better than HSG, it is simple, safe and far better than HSG.
There is no risk of radiation exposure.
Sterile fluid is pushed into the uterus through the cervix while taking an ultrasound scan image of the inside of the uterus.
Why is Sonohsg performed?
- Abnormal Uterine bleeding
- Fibroids or Polyps, facts about the size, extent and location.
- Miscarriages
- Infertility
- Uterine Scar tissue
- Abnormal shape of Uterus
- The problem in the lining of the uterus
- To know whether the Fallopian tubes are open open or not.
Sonohsg is not allowed, if you have Pelvic Inflammatory disease or are pregnant to prevent the spread of infection.
You may be asked to do pregnancy test to rule out pregnancy.
It is usually scheduled between Menstrual day 6 to day 11 to get a clear view of the lining of the uterus.
Your fertility specialist will perform a pelvic examination to rule out pain and infection.
Sonohsg is done with an empty bladder.
You need to remove your dress from the waist down.
What are the stages involved in Sonohsg
The first transvaginal ultrasound Scan is done to look inside the uterus, followed by a speculum to expose the cervix.
The cervix is then cleaned with the Povidone iodine.
A tiny tube is inserted into the cervix.
Infusion of normal saline then the second transvaginal Ultrasound scan.
A cramp is felt as the fluid moves inside the Uterus but not as serious as that of HSG.
An image of the lining of the uterus is then shown on the screen. To show the tube, fluid containing bubbles is pushed inside the uterus, making it easier for the fallopian tubes to be seen.
What can happen to you after Sonohsg?
You will be able to go home and engage in your normal activities. Some women may experience cramping, watery discharge and slight bleeding or spotting.
Are you exposed to risks with Sonohsg?
Sonohsg is safe. There may be a risk of Pelvic infection but this is rare. If you have a fever, abdominal pain and a change in a watery discharge after Sonohsg you can contact our Fertility Specialist Dr G. L. Yahaya.
Do you have any other alternative to Sonohsg?
- Hysterosalpingography (HSG) This is the X-Ray test of the. uterine cavity and the fallopian tubes. It shows whether the fallopian tubes are opened or blocked.
- Hysteroscopy: A telescope attached to a light source is passed into the Uterus through the cervix to see and treat certain abnormalities of the uterus.
- Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) views the inside of internal organs but does not view the inside of the Uterus well.
